Shopify Agentic Storefronts — Commerce Moves Inside AI Conversations

On 24 March, Shopify flipped a switch that changes how products get discovered online. Every eligible merchant's catalogue is now automatically surfaced inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and the Gemini app — no merchant action required.

The numbers tell the story: AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores has increased 7x since January 2025, and AI-attributed orders are up 11x over the same period.

What makes this significant is the distribution model. Merchants no longer control how their products appear in AI conversations — the platform does.

For marketers, this is a wake-up call. Product discovery is migrating from search results and social feeds into conversational AI interfaces.

MCP Reaches 97 Million Monthly Installs — The Agent Infrastructure Standard

On 25 March, Anthropic's Model Context Protocol crossed 97 million monthly SDK downloads — a 4,750% growth rate in just 16 months since its November 2024 launch.

MCP is the protocol that lets AI agents connect to external tools and data sources in a standardised way. Every major AI provider now ships MCP-compatible tooling by default.

Why does this matter for businesses? Because agentic AI only works if agents can reliably connect to your systems. MCP is becoming the USB port of AI.

For technical teams evaluating agent infrastructure in Q2, MCP support should be a non-negotiable requirement.

OpenAI Shuts Down Sora — A $1M/Day Reality Check

OpenAI announced on 24 March that it's discontinuing Sora. The app will fully shut down by 24 September 2026. Sora was burning approximately $1 million per day in compute costs while usage collapsed.

The fallout was immediate. Disney dropped its planned $1 billion investment in OpenAI, reportedly citing Sora's underperformance.

This is a significant moment for the AI industry. OpenAI made a ruthless ROI calculation and killed one of its most high-profile products.

For marketers, this is a reality check — not a dead end. AI video is still advancing through competitors like Runway, Pika, and Google's Veo.
